Our History

Centwest Engineering & Steel Supplies is an independently owned and operated business situated in Miner Rd, Longreach, Queensland. Proprietors Ian & Margaret Harris formed the business in 1987 when they purchased the engineering department and premises of a long established family earthmoving company. Ian was a partner within the original family business, and had commenced work in there in1969. Centwest’s early focus was primarily on the supply of steel products and quality engineering, fabrication, and mechanical repair services to the grazing industry.

As the business grew, the proprietors perceived a marketing opportunity to provide a local outlet where regional customers could purchase competitively priced, quality industrial tools and products. Subsequently, a small retail outlet supplying a limited range of products was incorporated into the existing workshop premises.

The success of the retail business led to a gradual expansion of the product range until it outgrew the available workshop floorspace. In 2006 the retail and steel supply sections of the business were relocated across the road to new purpose-built premises, whilst the workshop remained in the old building. The modern air-conditioned showroom and large undercover steel warehouse gave Centwest the largest such premises within an area bounded by Roma, Emerald, Mt Isa and Alice Springs.
